Timbermill Wind Presents First Tax Payment, becoming Chowan County’s Largest Taxpayer

Chowan County, North Carolina – November 18, 2025 – Apex Clean Energy welcomed state and local officials to the Timbermill Wind operations center on Tuesday to present the first of many annual property tax payments to Chowan County from the wind project.

Apex CEO Ken Young marked the occasion by presenting nearly $750,000 in net tax payments to Chowan County, making Timbermill Wind the county’s single largest taxpayer. This was the first of many annual payments that will bring approximately $50 million in new local revenue to the county over the project’s lifetime to support community priorities, including education and emergency services.

“It is a true privilege to present this contribution to Chowan County—a downpayment on the long-term economic benefits that Timbermill Wind will bring to the region over the next 30 years,” said Young. “We are grateful for our strong relationship with Chowan County and look forward to the decades of partnership to come.”
The 189-megawatt wind energy project, developed and operated by Apex, came online in December 2024. So far in 2025, the project’s 45 wind turbines have generated enough homegrown energy to power the equivalent of 28,000 average American homes.

The state’s second operating wind farm, Timbermill Wind will provide significant economic benefits to the region. With this first net payment, the wind facility becomes the community’s largest taxpayer, contributing more in property taxes this year than last year's top nine taxpayers combined.
“The folks at Apex Clean Energy and Timbermill Wind are fantastic partners,” said Chowan County Commissioner Bob Kirby. “The lease benefits mean so much for family farmers’ legacy and a major benefit that this project, as a good neighbor, has given us is that tax check, and there will be many more like it in the future. For that, the citizens of Chowan County, and me speaking on behalf of them, say a very hearty thank you.”

Additionally, the project includes long-term investments in community organizations through Apex’s Community Grant Program, which has awarded more than $120,000 in funding to date for local nonprofits and causes, as well as support for regional reforestation and improvements by the Friends of the Great Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina Wildlife Federation through Apex’s Conservation Grant Program.
